hradzka: (roy harper)
Yesterday I got to go shooting for the first time in a long time. I was in my old town, where I visited my friends Denise and Ash. Ash likes guns, too, so we went down to my old gun shop haunt.

I hadn't been there in more than a year, and going in was both good and a little sad. Harry, the proprietor, is a WW2 vet. I'm used to seeing him very vigorous and active, always behind the counter with a cigar in his mouth when he's not chatting with the boys around the "bullshit table" at the front of the shop. He wasn't behind the counter when I came in. He was recovering from some leg surgery, and he looked tired and old. He was still cheerful as ever, though. The gun-shop dogs were as friendly as ever, too.

The associated range had changed management, but it's still a fun place to shoot. I was shooting very well, which always makes me happy; burned through a hundred rounds of .38 special, and shot a bunch of .22 Long Rifle. Also, Ash brought his Thunder 5, which shoots .45 Long Colt and .410, so we had a lot of fun shooting that. Denise had never fired a gun before, and wanted to learn, so we taught her to shoot on Ash's dad's Ruger Single Six. She was a little nervous, but did very well for her first time. I suspect she'll do better yet in the future.

I did very well, considering; shot most of a hundred rounds and only had a couple of non-bullseyes, but I was using a non-regulation target and I was shooting from maybe twenty or twenty-five feet, so it's not as impressive as it sounds. Will post the picture of me with target when it turns up in my email.

YOU NEED A BOOK

A POEM EVERY DAY

The collected poems from my descent into madness year spent writing daily poems are now available from Lulu as the cheapest 330-page book they would let me make ($16.20). If that's too pricey, you can also get it from Lulu as a free download, or just click on the "a poem every day" tag to read them here. But if you did buy one, that'd be awesome.
