-- Protesters heckle Israeli official. This is not remarkable. However, when said official is speaking at the Oxford Union and one of the numerous hecklers is an Oxford student who actually is yelling "Kill the Jews!" I think it's safe to say there is a serious problem. Britain is a bad place for Jews these days.

Britain is a bad place for Jews these days.

... it is? Dammit, no-one told me.

I'm demi-Jewish so I may be missing out on some things (though I am proud to say that I can Google my RL surname and find racist websites claiming that my dad is part of the international Jewish conspiracy). But I honestly don't feel that Britain is in any way an unsafe place for me.

There's certainly some deep-rooted and poisonous anti-Semitism in British society, and some of it is hideously tangled up with criticism of Israel, and has been for a long while. But many Americans seem to have the perception that Britain's suddenly being swept by a brand new wave of anti-Semitism and we are all living in fear and ... ain't so.

(Also, Oxford students can be bigoted little shits. This is not news.)

Most of your loud anti-Jew stuff is coming from Muslim extremists feeling their oats.

Some of it is, definitely. But in terms of attacks on synagogues etc., my impression is that a lot of it's still coming from the usual suspects, the BNP and related organizations (our resident white supremacists). They've been doing terrifyingly well in elections lately, and are also feeling their oats.

Sometimes their desire to beat up the Muslims outweighs their desire to beat up the Jews and you get bizarre shit like this (a bunch of skinheads demonstrating outside a mosque waving an Israeli flag). But their anti-Semitism runs very deep.

It's not just that he's sick enough to say it; he's not *afraid* to say it, because he doesn't think there will be any consequences to his calling for Jews to be murdered. And he's probably right.

Oh hell no, he's not. If he's identified -- and it sounds from the report as if they know who shouted that -- I imagine he's being hauled in front of the dean of his college right now. I would expect him to be suspended, and quite possibly kicked out of the university permanently.

Oxford can be pretty Fail in its handling of race issues (and class issues and gender issues and disability issues, and I speak as someone who went there), but you don't get to shout "Kill the Jews!" and not have the university come down on you like a tonne of bricks.

The collected poems from my descent into madness year spent writing daily poems are now available from Lulu as the cheapest 330-page book they would let me make ($16.20). If that's too pricey, you can also get it from Lulu as a free download, or just click on the "a poem every day" tag to read them here. But if you did buy one, that'd be awesome.
