What do you think of the reversal at the start of 'The Hobbit'?

I don't like the start of the book anyway, because of the author's patronising tone in talking to the reader, even though I really enjoy it from about half-way through.

But it's a definite 'this character has a knee-jerk response of refusing adventure' situation, where the character is then shocked into running off after adventure by the clever stage-management of another character.

However, I think it works pretty well. It does so because Bilbo is set up as a juvenile -- barely adult -- who grows up over the course of the novel. We're not meant to see him as admirable at the start, nor as self-aware enough to realise he wants adventure. The story of the novel is the story of his learning what he's actually capable of and what he likes to do.

YOU NEED A BOOK

A POEM EVERY DAY

The collected poems from my descent into madness year spent writing daily poems are now available from Lulu as the cheapest 330-page book they would let me make ($16.20). If that's too pricey, you can also get it from Lulu as a free download, or just click on the "a poem every day" tag to read them here. But if you did buy one, that'd be awesome.
